What Is A Free Safety?
Mar 14, 2024Free safety is a player that plays in the defensive backfield.
They are one of two safeties that play on the field.
Free safety differs from strong safety because they play on the weak side of the field.
The weak side of the field is the side that has LESS players on it.
Example: In the picture below you can see that the weak side (or side with less players) is the side with two wide receivers vs the strong side that has TE, RB, and WR.
Players known for playing this position include Ed Reed, Ronnie Lott, and Justin Simmons.
