Inside zone running is when the offense is attacking the interior gaps on the offensive line utilizing a zone blocking scheme.

The o-line will create double team matchups that progress up to the 2nd level.

The o-line will know who to block by using a filled/unfilled gap system.

Filled and Unfilled Gap System:

If the run play is going to the right and you have a defender lined up in the gap to your right, that is a filled gap. When your gap is filled you block that defender and try prevent them from tackling the ball carrier.

If there is no player, it is an unfilled gap, so you can chip the person lined up to the inside and then work your way up to the 2nd level of the defense.
