Pistol is a formation where the QB receives the snap via short pass from the QB, but is only 2 to 3 yards away from the center. It is like the cousin to shotgun, however, there are some differences. 

The benefits of using pistol:

  1. QB can see better off line of scrimmage
  2. You can have additional blockers in the run game
