What Is A Strong Safety?

american football defense football 101 football terminology football training strong safety Mar 14, 2024

Strong safety (SS) is a player that plays in the defensive backfield.

They are one of two safeties that play on the field.

Strong safety differs from free safety(FS) because they play on the strong side of the field.

The strong side of the field is the side that has the MOST players on it.

Example: In the picture below you can see that the strong side (or side with more players) is the side with the tight end (TE), running back (RB), and wide receiver (WR). That is the side that the strong safety will play on.

Players known for playing strong safety include Troy Polamalu, Derwin James, and Kam Chancellor.
